IMHO it is a fake. I base this on close inspection in photoshop. There is no sign of any refelection in the right place, but I could be wrong and it could be a leader. Steve |

Steve Strange, I can see the reflection of the leader just fine, it appears not to go straight up (relatively) but to be tilted away from the viewer making the reflection appear shorter. Makes sense since the main strike hit behind the hill. -- Chris |

I have software that will create lightning on an image and it looks prity convincing when its done. It is the colour and position that makes me unsure. Leaders are also more white in images I have seen and taken. The green is also default setting in one of the most comon lightning producting filters that you can use with PSP or PS. The leader stands out far too much though, they are never that bright. I am also wondering if its a refelection in the camera caused buy the filter elements as the main strike in the image as it is very bright. To be honist and fair if it was not for the suspect leader the image is a very good shot. I stick with my gut feeling... fake. Steve |

That's either an artefact, fake or somebody's got the upward leader. IMHO
it's a bit bright, I thought they were fainter than that?? I tend to agree with Martin on this one: if it's not a fake it's one of several "streamers" that went up from the ground as the pool of electrons from the exploratory downward leader neared the ground. I have a picture somewhere which shows several streamers going up from treetops & chimneys etc but only one made the connection. If I can find it, I'll post it to alt.binaries.weather. Nigel Aagh! Every time I learn something new... it pushes something old out of my brain! |
