We keep hearing about how these hot and sticky nights mean that
we won't get a good nights sleep, but it never seems to affect me at all.
I'm surprised because I'm a light sleeper and it usually won't take
much to wake me up. How much does it affect others?

Leaving the windows open and sleeping above the duvet is
enough for me

My room has lots of electrical equipment in and gets very hot in these
conditions. For 3 nights running the temperature has been over 30C when I
have gone to bed. The only way I can get to sleep is to leave the fan on
all night, which is quite refreshing actually.

Not the problems up here - most nights are getting down to around 11C
min and 18C is being reached by sunset after highs around 25C. Because
of the refreshingly cool evening breezes, just opening doors and windows
is sufficient. In fact it can get a little cool in the house if I overdo
the fresh air!

My sister is coming up from Slough today - she usually appreciates our
breezes.

Living around 900 feet and within the North Sea influence can have some
advantages, it seems!

weeks night and day, 18c 35%rh

As a nightshift worker I have to say it's been hellish trying to sleep
during the day.
This morning was not as bad as the air temp' fell to 11°C and the inside
temp. back to a near manageable 23°C. It's not just the heat though,
neighbouring kids and music all increase in volume on warm days. Moan, moan,
moan. BUT - on the whole, the benefits still outweigh the discomforts.

Been staying in a Premier Lodge hotel in Normanton all week - it's (tiny) windows only open a little and let in almost zero air - needless to say sleep was nigh on impossible. Don't know the temp but I'm certainly looking forward to using the aircon now I'm back home !!!

Funnily enough over the years the heat seems to affect me less. This summer
though I've had to take drastic action and put the head end of the bed into
the bay window (upstairs). I then leave the sash cord windows wide open at
the top and bottom with the curtains puilled back, thus allowing a good
circulation of air. I have to admit though the night before last, in SE
London the air was just not moving, in desperation I resorted to hoiking the
nets up as well. Thankfully last night was a tad cooler.

Radio 5 did a piece yesterday about the Edwardians and their Sash-Cord
windows. Apparently there's an optimum position to enhance cooling. Trouble
was I didn't get to hear it.
Now young Eden. Was he on 5 duty yesterday?

Poor sleeping? Now a homeless person with nowt to their name under the
stars in the open air. Now that really is a poor sleeper.
