Jeanne - More than 600 die

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3674990.stm :
:More than 600 people have died in Haiti after floodwaters raged
:through the island in the wake of tropical storm Jeanne, UN
:officials say.

Not much reported compared to Frances and Ivan but I suppose the areas
hit are poor, black and not as well supplied with TV stations and
webcams.

And what does being black have to do with your comment? I hope a private
observation and not anything racist.

Apparently the flooding was exacerbated by the deforestation that has
occurred in Haiti resulting in mudslides as well asreducing the retention of
the water in the hills. The trees are used to produce charcoal. No doubt
this is a cosequence of the islands undoubted poverty.

So what excuse have the cruise liner operators got for letting the
people die?

Act of God?

Far from it. I think Michael was making the opposite point that if you are
poor, black and low tech it's not of much interest to the U.S.A. tv
networks.

Indeed. The hurricanes that hit the USA and islands used for holidays
were fully reported in the media. The latest storm, although causing
far worse loss of life hardly rated a mention.
