what a waste!

Apologies to everyone for stating the obvious here - but what a waste
this current weather pattern is. It has snowed for nearly an hour and
a half here in Langdon Hills, Essex, yet there has been no
accumulation. Just patches from the overnight snow remain. After
seeing the 2cm accumulation everywhere this morning I was really
hopeful, but the temperature (even without the sun and evaporative
cooling from falling snow) is just not cold enough for the snow to
settle.

A shame!

Quite a bit of solar radiation gets through the clouds. To get accumulation you
need intensity and duration. These 15 minute showers are just not enough.

A shame!

Not the case this time Martin! Just driven down from same Langdon Hills
where it has been snowing moderately and continuously now for about 4 hours
and it just will not stick! Temp at 30m asl is 1.7C so will be colder at the
100m there.

I think part of the problem is that the winter up to now has been so mild
that the soil temperature is warmer than it would otherwise be. Thus as soon
as the snow tries to settle it gets thawed by heat diffusing from the
subsurface. When I was at work today there was about an inch of lying snow
on the ground and this was thawing even though snow was falling regularly
and it was cloudy.
