Default Not a lot of rain

Water shortages next summer?

Not that I keep rain fall records. On the Suffolk Coast it seems we
haven't had a lot of rain at all.

Steve, the Hadley centre stats. for the SE over last 3 months may be of
interest :-

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research...EP_Sep2004.gif
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research...EP_Oct2004.gif

and November until the 9th :-
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research..._act_graph.gif

for England and Wales :-
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research...WP_Aug2004.gif
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research...WP_Sep2004.gif
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research...WP_Oct2004.gif

November :-
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research..._act_graph.gif

September was below average but August and October appear to more than make
up for it, with the totals for Aug, Sep. and Oct. standing at roughly 148%
of the average for England and Wales and 130% for the SE.

Perhaps my often flippantly said phrase of "cancel the hosepipe bans" has a
grain of truth to it :-)

England and Wales figures are available to the 15th at:
www.climate-uk.com/graphs/0411.htm and
www.climate-uk.com/graphs/200411.htm

of the average for England and Wales and 130% for the SE.

None of these national and regional figures reveal the relative
dryness of the East Anglian coast where Lowestoft collected only
55mm in October (Weybourne's 48mm looks appreciably too low
as adjacent Cromer had 74mm), Clacton 48mm, and just inland
Coltishall 73mm and Wattisham 79mm. September figures at
most of these sites was between 20 and 40mm.

Interesting, as are the current reservoir storage levels, particularly
compared to a year ago :-

Also dry in this part of Kent - just 107.7mm (47%) total for September,
October and November so far. 21.1mm (32%) in September, 73.4mm (86%) in
October and currently 13.2mm (17%) to date in November.

Similar in S.Essex, and there was one intense spell of 20mm a lot of which
would have run off - the water table on our S.Essex clay is as low as I've
seen it for the time of year.

But the EA figures are so general as to be almost meaningless.
Here in West Cornwall we had the wettest October for 14 years, the
resevoir which supplies St Ives / Penzance and the whole of the far SW has
been overflowing for month, but the EA shows resevoir levels in SW at 58%.

Don't forget, the Suffolk coast is the UK's desert and gets less rainfall per
annum than Beirut, Cairo and Seville.
