Feeblest excuse heard for closing a school?
I'll start the ball rolling. Heard from a Headteacher from the south on
Radio 5 Live this afternoon:- "The toilets might freeze" Let's hope he doesn't teach physics! Presumably the toilets are outside and they haven't heard of insulation. Even if it had been -10 every night this week that still wouldn't have happened! Doh! Dave |

I heard this, too. It really does make you laugh, doesn't it. Have
these people not heard of trace heaters on their pipe lagging? I suggest they review their plumbing / maintenance contracts if not... I can only remember one time when my school was closed due to the weather...1987 for an entire week. But then the temperatures and snow did warrant it and the toilet pans in the outside loo block did all crack from the ice that formed. Other occasions prior to this however, in all the snow of the 70s and 80s, I can remember very few occasions where schools were closed. We just seemed to struggle on with the journey in and the dangers of ice and snow in the playground which everyone used to delight in sliding on.Some of the bruises were horrific, but there wasn't even a suggestion of claiming on insurance. |

In my whole school career, I think there was only one day when snow prevented me from getting to school (and that was in early March one year). Back at high school in Leeds in the early 80's I could usually count on at least one day a year when the schools were closed. However the school was right at the highest part of the city and thus pretty exposed and conditions had to be fairly severe for it to happen. I think its all to do with the claim culture we live in today, however you never see factories closed when theres a frost. Too much PROFIT lost if that were to happen. In 1995, we just carried on ALL DAY through some 12 inch(!) snowDRIFTS,
and even just some ELEVEN months later, in November, 1996, with just a roundabout 10 inches of snow, we all just carried on AS PER NORMAL!:-o :-( It's pathetic. It truly is pathetic. Some Siberian Slavs have to live ALL year round under PERMAFROST CONDITIONS, and yet they still managed to get educated. So much so, in fact, and here is an interesting fact for you all, the man who invented the space rocked WAS a Siberian Russian PEASANT!:-o :-) Now who says that socialism doesn't work? D. |

Francis Bacon (1561-1626) In my entire school career from early '60's to mid '70's, I only remember 4 days of closed school due to snow! 1) Late Feb 1962 (exact date unknown) after heavy overnight snowfall, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, entire day. 2) Jan 1963, (exact date unknown), early afternoon finish, due to heavy snowfall, same location as above. 3) 7th Feb 1969, early afternoon finish, very heavy snowfall (synoptic situation of that day often discussed in this NG), Loughborough, Leics. 4) 20th Feb 1969, lunchtime finish, all day snowfall, Loughborough, Leics. It may have been bad in the Northern parts today and closures may have been justified up there but to hear reports of Southern county school closures and rail/air travel delays/cancellations in the South leaves one despairing just what we are becoming in this Country. Part of me wishes today had happened last week when the IOC were here and they could then have seen what a bunch of wimps we really are, only then to go to NY and see how they handle similar things so much better. -- Pete Please take my dog out twice to e-mail --------------------------------------------------------------- The views expressed above are entirely those of the writer and do not represent the views, policy or understanding of any other person or official body. --------------------------------------------------------------- |

Most teachers will do anything they can to get away from the nasty little 2 OT's these days and I can't blame them. I can see a time coming when every class will need three adults present, not the two that is common these days. -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |
