Snowfall statistics - February 2005

February had the highest number of days with 'snow falling' ( 10 ) in this
area since February 1986 which had 17 days. It beat January 1997 - 8days -
and February 1991 which had 9.
February , on its own , has equalled the modern average ( 1988 - 2004) of
annual snow days which stands at 9.7. The average from 1970 - 1987 was 18.4
days.
The last time a year exceeded the 1970 - 1987 average was 1996 so much
probably depends on March's contribution. March's average in the earlier
period was 4.2 days slumping to 1.3 days since 1988. However, the month
contributed 4 days last year so maybe it is returning to form and it has
already snowed here this morning. In March 1987 I logged 9 days with snow
falling.

5 days in Manchester, with only 2 occassions heavy/persistent enough to
give a brief cover of about 1cm.

No snow cover lasted more than 2 hours.

We've had much more rain than snow falling.

Very disappointing, especially given that just a degree (or two) colder
and we'd have seen a very pleasant spell of snowy conditions.

Shrewsbury: 7 falling, 1 lying (24th, 1cm).

Most snowdays since Jan 1997. That month had 5-10 cms lying for a
week......

Currently 6C and sunny.

Sorting out the Epping stats for February I was surprised to find that the
13 days with snow falling is the highest for that month since records began
in 1979. Particularly when considering that both the depth and persistence
of the snow cover were quite unremarkable. Feb 1986 had 12 days with snow
falling, Feb 1991 11 but much greater depths and persistence of cover.

And it is the depth and the persistence of cover that people remember
most. So many people I've spoken to are really disappointed with this
cold spell. The "days with snow falling" stat may be impressive but this
cold spell is not a patch on 1987 or 1991 in my book.
