Default [WR] Humungous snowflakes, north Kent

The radar shows a "pink" splodge just to the east of here at 9:30z and
10:00z, with little movement in that time.

I've been watching the radar with some frustration this morning. Where I
live (Cranleigh, Surrey) has been right on or just outside the edge of
the region of precipitation, which hardly seems to have moved, and the
air has been damp but with nothing visibly falling.

It's now been snowing for almost three hours, with the temperature having
fallen to just 0.2C. The largest snowflakes I've seen since at least 1997
are plastering everything, with an inch on the roads and an inch and a half
on the grass.

(WR refers to Leysdown, north Kent, 10m ASL)

Stayed at a constant 0.8°C here with only light (but persistent) snow,
small flakes. Barely 1cm on grass and nothing on roads and paths. Just
about to venture up to the University to teach - the 60m height gain
might make all the difference!

When we got home (Elmsted/Stelling Minnis, Kent North Downs 155m ASL) after
a couple of days away last night it was raining very heavily and the
temperature was 2.5 degrees. There was still some snow lying from last week
but most of it had finally melted (we had 3-6inches lying for the whole of
last week - whenever the sun melted some some more would fall to replace
it). When we woke this morning at about 7am there was a fresh inch of snow
on the ground and more falling and the temperature just above freezing at
0.3degrees.

We drove into Canterbury at about 10mph as there was no grit on the roads
(presumably washed off by the earlier rain) and had to stop to help a
motorcyclist who had skidded over. My husband has just managed to get into
work in Maidstone but there are plenty of big flakes coming down on the
university campus at the moment. I love snow but I'm getting a little
concerned about getting home tonight... anyone like to issue a localised
weather forecast as to whether the snow will turn back to rain in the
Maidstone/Canterbury/north downs areas this afternoon??

Teresa. :-)
