Anticyclonic inversion

Thursday's report from the Free University of Berlin
http://www.met.fu-berlin.de/deutsch/...etterlage.html notes a
striking effect of the inversion under the European anticyclone.

At the station on the top of the Brocken in the Harz Mountains at 1142 m,
100% of the astronomically possible sunshine was recorded on Wednesday with
relative humidity sometimes under 10%.

At 02.00 UTC on Thursday the Brocken reported a temperature of 5.6°C, dew
point -36.7°C and relative humidity of 3%.

In Bavaria, Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the valley reported -7.5°C at 06.00 on
Thursday. At the same time the station on the top of the nearby Zugspitze
at around 3000 m was reporting only -1.8°C.

Excellent example over France of the Massif Central sticking through
the inversion. Limoges on Friday hit nearly 15ºC with a cloudless sky,
low humidity, and virtually unlimited visibility. Because its airport is
at 400m altitude it's usually one of France's coldest regional capitals.

On Saturday as well - Limoges 12.7°C. It stands out clearly on the Cologne
max. temps chart

Also Embrun at 876 m asl in the southern French Alps: 15.8°C on Friday and
15.0°C on Saturday.
