Default [WR] Howhill 15th April

A rather miserable day.

There has been preciptation falling virtually all day, this morning
was heavy driving sleet. Mostly rain this afternoon but turned back to
sleet this evening. Just after 2000 it really got going rate of 8mm/hr
and about 20mm fell in just over two hours. Nothing has been recorded
since 2215 but the temp has dropped from just under 3C to a shade over
0C and the sleet has turned to snow, about 2cm lying on the road now.

Today has clicked up 45mm of wet (midnight to midnight) on top of the
18mm on the 14th. At least the wind has dropped from F6 to F4 with the
coming of the heavy sleet then snow about 2000.

I guess the higher routes will be getting rather "interesting" now. At
0930 this morning the A689 Killhope (2000') had been ploughed clear of
an inch or so of snow but had been recovered with another inch of
slush (effect of the salt). The back edge doesn't appear to be too far
from us now so I doubt that any of the roads will actually be closed
tonight, maybe 4WD only.

Just about in the middle of lambing as well, mind they are tough
little blighters up here. They have to be, snow or a cold snap during
lambing pretty normal.

Dave is just about correct with his summary, just back from the area, high
routes well covered in snow, drifting snow aswell above 1600feet - level
depth around 3-4inches at best, drifts to about 1foot on the very tops

A689 Alston to Stanhope and A686 Alston to Penrith over Hartside worst
affected

Snow became heavy mid evening, then turned to powdery type snow later,
almost sounded like hailstones as it hit the windscreen, no doubt something
to do with layers of hot and cold in the clouds ?

Snow continues as far as Hallbankgate at around 700feet - I am back at home
and currently have sleet and plus 3c

cheers

In a non global warming world, I wonder if this would have been
an April 1981 type event.

Doesn't look as if we got much more from midnight on. So a couple of
cm lying, tiddly little 6" drift (remember the other week it was 6'
drifts...) against the front door.

The temp held at freezing until 0330 when it started to rise, this
triggered a snow melt surge into the raing guage at 0430 that lasted 2
1/2 hours and added 20mm more precipitation to yesterdays 45mm. Total
since midday 14th is 18 + 45 + 20 = 83mm (3 1/4").

Temp has fallen from a max of 2.6C at 0630 to just under 1C
corresponding to a drop in wind speed and change of direction from NE
to ESE'ly. A gentle thaw continues as we drift in and out of hill fog.
