Default Arctic Ice

I have made a small alteration to my web site showing Arctic Ice concentration
maps. The three maps displayed are today, this day 3 years ago, and this day
six years ago. I made this change because it shows dramatically just how much
the concentration has reduced in only six years. See;
http://www.abmcdonald.freeserve.co.uk/north.htm

Cheers, Alastair.

Funny you should mention that Alastair - I was just checking the charts
this morning and thought - my goodness what a marked deterioration in
the concentration.

Though strangely the overall size doesn't seem hugely different, but it
is the concentration indices which seem way different. I don't suppose
that a bit like crime statistics etc. there has been any improvement in
the monitoring so that say from the last couple of years there is a more
accurate picture?

Just a thought - otherwise come the end of the Summer perhaps there will
be an NE passage open as well as an NW one?

Cheers,

James

Steady on.

Rewind the clock and compare for another month (say Aug 2004, 2001 and
1998).

Surprise, surprise - no significant trend. We have to be careful.

John and Alastair,

The better comparison would be the trend in the minimum extent variable.
There is more noise in the monthly (daily is worse yet) data. The "concentration"
data is calculated in a way which may not give an accurate value of fractional
coverage, IMHO.
