[OT] Flight path
 

Maybe Philip Layton will know the answer to this.
Going to Croatia soon and I was wondering what is the normal flight path from Manchester. After studying the latest sat images
before departure it might help me decide which side to sit on for best cloud/storm pics.

though I'm not sure it's completely accurate regarding flight paths all
the time. It gives the shortest route between the two.
Putting in Manchester-Zagreb sends it over Belgium, across Germany into
Austria, just skirting the eastern Alps.
Manchester-Dubrovnik sends it over Luxembourg, extreme west Austria (ie
the highest part) and the NE corner of Italy.

Rob, I don't know about Dubrovnik, but I travel London-Athens quite often
and the planes do not travel on great circles. I am sure that the pilots on
this ng will describe the air corridors used most frequently and give some
idea of the route you might well take.

For views I always prefer to look out away from the sun, so that the side I
would prefer depends on the time of the flight. Of course you might not get
a choice!

The honest answer is that there is no 'normal' flight path. Especially at
this time of the year. The airlines file different routes dependant on:

Type of aircraft
Wind
ATC delays ant any choke points
Fuel burn
Navigation charge of ATC Service suppliers

In reality, you either leave Manchester and go E across the North Sea and
down Germany, or down through the UK, France, Switzerland and across....

You may go through batch of thunderstorms, so yours sitting arrangements
doesn't matter!

I just used to let the First Officer tell me which way we were going.

But once I was called from standby to fly to Graz. I asked the
Operations department what country that was in. "No idea". So out
came the schoolboy atlas (Austria)

Oh yes you do. Well maybe not through thunderstorms but certainly above
them. Flying back from Nice to Luton last August we had to climb to
42,000ft. I was given a great electrical display from Nice to Paris, it was
a lot more dramatic seeing as it was night time.
