Default Glenlivet hottest yesterday?

My mother tells me that it says in her newspaper (and I use the term
loosely, it's The Sun) that the hottest place in the UK yesterday was
Glenlivet, at 29.8C, which it also says is the second highest
temperature recorded in Scotland since records began, 45 years ago.

It all sounds highly suspect to me - any comments?

I've found it on their web site:

http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2...20109,,00.html

I feel rather grubby now.

Have they just made the entire thing up, or are there any grains of
truth anywhere in the whole story?

Don't chastise yourself, Steve, it's only 'The Sun'.

Yes and no. Glenlivet's highest reading yesterday was 30.0°C
which may well be a new station record, beating 29.9°C in
June 1976. The reported 29.8°C was, I suspect, the highest
hourly or 3-hourly reading. It was, though, no hotter than
Hurn airport (Bournemouth) which also had 30.0°C.

No reason to disbelieve it: Aviemore which is at a slightly greater
altitude had 29.0°C.

Glenlivet was always a privately run station, although that
may have changed in recent times. It dates back to 1965.

And would this really be the second highest recorded temperature in
Scotland? The current record holder appears to be Greycrook with 32.9C,
and wasn't the previous record held by Dumfries, also over 30C?

Ah. I have good reason to be interested in Glenlivet, as I should be
living there this time next month.

It said this on Ceefax and on NW tonight this evening.
I recorded a max of 29.5C yesterday.

According to Philip Eden this site is an AWS, part of a
network known as the Campbell Data Logger (CDL).possibly
in not the best location either, leading to over-reading in strong
sunshine. Apparently 30.6C was recorded there yesterday.

Or even a climate data logger :-)

I'm still not sure about the source of the Bolton data, (see my other post)
will hopefully get an answer soon.

I took another meaning into "I have good reason to be interested in
Glenlivet"...

NOAA APT showed temps of 31.5 in various parts of the NW Highlands.

I don't know how accurate the readings are, but hovering the mouse over
my location produced a reading that agreed with my thermometer.
