This was posted to TWO as well and a bit of digging shows the 24hr
record is 1870mm, so this is well within the bounds of possibility.

Rob

The 1870 mm is a world record and was recorded in Réunion.
Nothing to do with Bombay. The 944 mm, reported in The Guardian as
94.4 cm, seems a bit on the wild side. On the other hand a "mere" 94.4
mm in 24 hours would not have caused the reported damage in Bombay,
which is well used to this sort of thing. At Bombay (Santacruz), whose
METARs I monitor during the monsoon there were several hours of +RA but
otherwise this year's monsoon seems to have been late and rather weak.

Here's the time series of precip at Santacruz

http://www.imdmumbai.gov.in/dcrf_scz.htm

Looking at the distribution of the highest single day July rains from
Santacruz from 1974-2004, it looks like 944 is a little bit more common
than a 1% event (it works about to about once per 90 years.)

Harold

There seems to be nothing like a 944mm figure in the table for the Mumbai
rainfall over the past week on the website you quote. The maximum seems to
be 151mm at Dharavi on 21 July.

What table?

I cited the plot at http://www.imdmumbai.gov.in/dcrf_scz.htm. On it,
they had had ~900 mm from 1 June-26 July. One day later, the cumulative
precip for the season is 1800 mm.

Click on "Last seven days rainfall in city" at the foot of the page that the
above link goes to. I agree that the figures in the table do not seem
consustent with the graph.

The "last seven days" listed in the table end on July 26th. 944.2 mm was
recorded on the morning of the 27th. The precipitous rise in the
cumulative total shown on the graph is between 26th and 27th.

Thanks Colin. That might explain it. I wonder if the table will be updated
soon.
