With a few days to go, the running mean for December at this site is a
whopping 5.1บC. Easily the mildest December on my records (began 1994). And I believe the mildest since 1989. It's approximately 2บC above the long term mean here. The average max is 7.8บC (+1.7บC), and the average min. is 2.3บC (+2.3บC). A quick glance at Philip Eden's site shows that the South East of England is running pretty near the LTA, but the anomally shown for Central Scotland (of +1บC) is rather different from the story I've recorded thus far. How many in the south are actually recording a colder than average month to this point? +0.2 so far in Penzance. (compared to 1971-2000 LTA)
In fact, since 1991 only in 4 years (1994, 1998, 2001 & 2003) has Decmber been warmer. No E or NE periods, so nothing really cold here. Still waiting for the 1st frost. Max 8.3 yesterday. The mean air temp so far is +7.7C which is 1.4C above the mean. The 10cm soil temp is 1.8C above mean at 7.1C. Rainfall is already at 114mm compared with the mean of 103mm. Alex, have you devised a local 30-year average, or are you comparing with 1994-2003? If the latter, you should be aware that the 1994-2003 mean for December is roughly 0.2 to 0.5 degC *lower* than the 1971-2000 mean. So your positive anomaly will be that much bigger. My figures also take account of the fact that the long-term mean for 1st-25th is 0.1-0.2 degC higher than that for the whole month. Philip Eden Philip Eden |

Philip Eden Philip, Yes, after reading your post I've just checked and over the last 10 years December is the only month significantly colder than the 1971-2000 norm, 0.4 degrees colder here. Another feature of the last 10 years or so has been the dryness of March. |
