Default OT Scandisk ?

My memory lets me down everytime.

I'm finding my computer sometimes flashes into a blue screen (can never
read this) then reboots. I think it maybe a windows or disk error.
The first thing I want to try is Scandisk, which you run from DOS. How
do you get to this point? F8 comes up with Uguru screen etc, F2 seem to
not respond. A noddy guide would be appreciated.

Thanks

XP, 2000 etc....?

(XP scandisk can be accessed by right clicking on the disk drive icon when
you've gone into 'my computer' - select properties then tools and finally
error checking)

Blue screen can be caused by driver problems - have you installed new
hardware recently?

You could install linux (no blue screens) and use a journalled filesystem
like ext3 (default on most installs) which will avoid those issues and does
not require defragging.

Assuming Windows XP you can change the Windows setting to make it stop on
the blue screen which gives the opportunity at least to see why it halted.
Control Panel/System/Advanced/Start up and Recovery/Settings and remove the
check from Automatically restart. If it subsequently halts you will have to
power off and then on again to restart your machine.

Right click on My Computer....properties... advanced... startup &
recovery. I'm running Windows 2003 but it's in the same place with XP.

To run a quick scandisk: start-run-cmd(enter).... chkdsk (enter) this
will tell you if your disk is goosed.

If the BSOD is meaningless to you then let us know what the error is....

Right clicking on your drive C:\ and clicking on properties will bring
up this box. Click check now and reboot as it won't scandisk an "opened"
drive. Repeat this for all your drives if you have more than one.

Also Look in your event log. Usually Windows will dump the blue screen
into the event log. The information that you're looking for is the Stop
Code. It looks like this: 0x00000000
0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00000000. then you can google it or
trawl the m$ pages.

XP ~ thanks for that, I try to avoid doing such things until it becomes
necessary, but of course when the time comes around I've forgotten what
I did.

I know the more times it crashes the more likely it is to do more damage
to either the OS or the hardware. I doubt it's overheating of the CPU as
I have a 120mm Heatsink on the Athlon 3400 which looking at 'Motherboard
Monitor' rarely gets hotter than 50°c, atm is 45°c

I ran Scandisk (Check disk) for my 'C' drive, as this is the main one
with the operating system on, it didn't appear to throw up any errors,
unless it corrected them in the background, it often does a quick Scan
when it reboots after a crash and does find error and currupt files
everytime it runs. I'll see how it goes for now.

I don't think I've installed anything apart from Firefox 1.0.7 upgrade,
which I find quite often crashes. I sometimes get the blue screen/reboot
when I try to attach a file or grab something from my 'slave' disk. I
read about the blue screen/driver issue, the next step if it happens
again is to put the XP disk in and do a install/repair as it maybe
possible some files have got corrupted. It was a thought that there
maybe some bad clusters whre the swap files are which prompted me to run
a scan disk.

Again thanks for your help

If I knew what I was doing better, I'd go along with you on this one.
Would all my Windows software work with it, Word, Excel etc and other
windows applications?

Most m$ documents open quite happily in Open Office / Staroffice / Word
Perfect all of which are available for stuffed penguin users.

They live in c:\documents & settings\username\username's documents and
can be pulled off to cd from there.
