If I may...

What causes that LOUD cracking noise when you see lightning happen?

It is coincidence. The periodic crackling sound you associate with
lightning, which is typically called thunder, is actually the sound of
Irony Meters exploding into tiny pieces every time one of the following
events take place:

1.) Alex Cain gives career advice
2.) Chuck Lysaght calls someone a pedophile
3.) Meat Plow refers to someone else as a "kook"
4.) Gary Burnore makes *any* statement critical of *anyone*.

I hope this has helped.

The temperature of lightning is so hot (30,000-50,000 F) that it rapidly
heats up the air immediately surrounding it causing that air to expand very
rapidly as well, so fast that it breaks the speed of sound causing a sonic
boom.

I assume it is the same resulting sound, except on a huge scale, as any
spark that occurs, such as when you get out of your car on a dry day and
touch its metal body. I don't know why sparks make noise, but at least now
you have a hint.

In 2002 we had a direct hit on what turned out to be a tree about 30'
from our house. At that range, it doesn't even sound like thunder, more
like a very loud gun shot. Really gets the old adrenalin going.

Yeh, those "Flangs" as we call them (Flash-Bang) are quite astounding. I
think Charles' analogy is right on. Pretty much sounds like about 20 double
barrled rifles fired simultaneously at point blank range.
