Two typhoons may hit Korea Two typhoons are moving simultaneously toward the Korean Peninsula, causing great concern even as its southern areas are recovering from a recent downpour. The Korea Meteorological Administration yesterday warned local governments to prepare for possible damage from Typhoon Chaba, which is approaching from the southeast near the island of Okinawa, Japan, and Typhoon Aere, which originated over Taipei. The two storms could affect the nation at the same time within the next three to four days, said KMA. The courses of both storms are unpredictable and either could veer away from the peninsula, according to KMA. But if the stronger one, Chaba, strikes it could inflict severe damage, the weather agency said. If both typhoons hit, they will be Korea's 16th and 17th this year. Southern regions of the country have yet to overcome damage from heavy rain that fell from Sunday to yesterday morning. Seongsanpo, Jeju Island, received 251.5 millimeters of rain Sunday, while nearby Seogwipo got 214 mm. Daegu got 55 mm yesterday morning, while Yeosu, South Jeolla Province, got 101.5 mm and Hapcheon, South Gyeongsang Province, received 62 mm. "The government must do its best to recover from the damage and guard against future harm from the two approaching typhoons," KMA official Kim Tae-ryong said. |
