Maybe like a lot of other Stations, due to lack of REAL observers on a 24
hour watch?

The figures for Wokingham for the summer months (Jun, Jul Aug) are as
follows
1999 13
2000 8
2001 10
2002 8
2003 5
2004 6
2005 7

Beware possible changes in observing practices at the stations you use.
Herstmonceux has probably become mainly automated obs during that period. If
your data is supplied by the Met Office, you should query this point with
them.

Hello Bernard

I've been trying to cross reference your data with RAOB soundings from
Herstmonecux.

I presumed there was a discrepancy, because your data, records if
thunder happen within the last 24 hours, while the RAOB soundings are a
snapshot, only taken at noon and midnight.

I cannot understand how Herstmonceux can become automated, when there
needs to be someone to send a weather balloon up twice a day.

I get my RAOB data from the University of Wyoming, I presumed that all
RAOB soundings made in the British Isles are carried out by the Met office.

Could it be due to the solar cycle? What happens if you go further back?

Cheers, Alastair.

Surely Herstmonceux uses Auto Sondes, which obviously require some prior
manual attention but not sure how this relates to somone available to
hear thunder 24 hrs a day ?

Did you send up a weather balloon ? ;-)

I think it's inconsiderate of TS not to pass over RAOB recording
stations, at noon and midnight. Especially to meteorology or computer
undergraduates ! ;-)

Joe

Here is the data for thuner days from Coventry - I think I can vouch
for the accuracy of these because these are the years in which I have
been th observer in Coventry, with Keiron's help in recent years.

1978 10
1979 6
1980 12
1981 11
1982 18
1983 22
1984 5
1985 8
1986 11
1987 13
1988 7
1989 9
1990 5
1991 2
1992 9
1993 12
1994 10
1995 12
1996 10
1997 14
1998 7
1999 18
2000 11
2001 11
2002 4
2003 8
2004 15

It doesn't look like there is a decline evident here to me, not in our
region at least.
