Default A cold Continent?

I have heard several references of late on forecasts I quote " now a very
cold Continent". Well this is not really so.
Current temperatures mid afternoon Warsaw 1C, Berlin 1C, to the southeast
Budapest at 1C, Vienna 1C and to the north east Helsinki minus 2C. Moscow is
chilly with minus 17C and even lower in parts of the city but as yet this
air is some distance from us.
Now similar references were made in January 1987 and things were a little
different- Helsinki minus 30C, Copenhagen minus 13C, Berlin minus11C,
Prague minus 17C, Moscow minus 27C, Budapest minus 17C, Munich -16C etc at
lunchtime on the 12th. Now that was cold.

.... yes indeed: just waiting for the first use of the phrase " .... an

Never ceases to amaze me, how the cold weather fans want a block to
hold for the next two months.

They would be happy to have water shortages next summer then?

We need to be hoping for Zonality right now, or some weather type that
will give a long period of wet weather across the south, and especially
the south-east

Two dry winter's in a row. Summer storms don't always fall over rez's

High pressure needs to sling it's hook for a while

I'm afraid the goalposts for defining cold have probably moved forever. Only
a small part of the population can clearly remember truly harsh weather. It
seems lots of the media and a fair few others are already trying to "make"
this into a cold winter to justify their previous headlines/predictions when
clearly so far it hasn't. We now have couple of days of "Arctic or
Siberian"(sic) weather and then I would imagine a spell of westerly
dominated weather. It would then take pretty much all of Feruary to be snowy
and near freezing to justify such claims.

It seems to me that the barrier between 'bitterly cold' temperatures and
'mild' weather is something like 4 or 5 degrees these days. Judging by the
BBC forecasts.

I'm no weather expert, but I think you'll find it doesn't make any
difference what we hope for.

It wasn't me Ian, I quite agree with you :-)

However, with a lot of snow lying about over the continent, given some
clear skies and the time of year, watch this space, as they say.

Not sure about that. I cycled 40km last thursday in a temperature of
-4c. I was covered in frost. That was harsh.

Now, perhaps only a small part of the population expose themselves to
the outdoors - I'd happily accept that! Most people just fall out of
their centrally heated, super insulated houses, into their fully heated
cars and never experience the outdoors.

Too true Chris, on the Tuesday after Christmas I went up the 1600 feet
callow hill part of the long mynd in west shrops. The ground was frozen
hard with sub zero temps, let alone the near gale blowing at the peak.

I saw quite a few motorists taking photos from their cars. Why don't
they get off their fat back sides and do some exercise ?

You can see a great deal of beautiful countryside while walking off
road, or even off the beaten track.
