uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged.

I will be installing a MSG satellite system at our college in February. When it's up and running I'll put 12 spectral images of
Europe onto our website.
Unfortunately due to licence restrictions they will only be updated every 6 hours.
The new MSG will run along side our present Meteosat 7 system until June when the WEFAX service is withdrawn.

So come June, do we just get 6 hourly MSG images?

Europe has a terrible record of allowing the public to access scientific
data/images from satellites and spacecraft. You can get hig res images
of the US at about 15 minute intervals.

Take these for instance from NASA Earth Obs spacecraft
http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/realtime/2006023/ and compare them to
Europes paltry crop from Envisat for isntance http://envisat.esa.int/

A thought. Could we as a bon fide science group buy a licence, with
individuals chipping in and then re-distribute the images via block
e-mails to the subscribers? That would get round making the images
generally available to the public. I don't know what a licence for 15
minute (frequency) images would cost - back of my mind is a number such
as 10,000 euros. If 200 people cough up, that would work out at about
£30 per year. Now that would be value for money if the images really
are high resolution - well at least as good as is possible from
geostationary satellites.

This just could turn out to be a blessing in disguise if we finally,
for a modest sum, get access to decent quality Meteosat images.

Incidentally, someone drew comparison to the Rapid Fire website. That
isn't comparing like with like. Rapid Fire is from low flying polar
orbiters.

I wonder if things will improve when the european satellite network is
up and ruining.

Given that they're the equivalent of the existing GPS satellites, no,
things won't improve.
