Microsoft have today released what seems (from a forum review I have just
read) to be a good package to check PCs for Spyware. The URL is http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...are/about.mspx If you have never run such software before, you might be amazed what it finds. -- Mike 55.13°N 6.69°W Coleraine posted to uk.sci.weather 06/01/2005 20:25:47 UTC |

Mike,
I run Search & Destroy and Adaware, two things here. Firstly do you not already run such spyware programmes and would this conflict? And secondly, it sounds like Microsoft are upto their dirty tricks again, although it must be siad that the two spyware software packages are free. Hi Keith I use Adaware and Spy Sweeper, but this new product has found stuff both of those missed. I think as long as you don't run them in the background - merely doing periodic checks - then there should be no conflict. -- Mike 55.13°N 6.69°W Coleraine posted to uk.sci.weather 06/01/2005 20:44:57 UTC |

would strongly recommend these spyware detector programs to keep a
clean system I'm using the same software listed above if people do internet banking without running these spyware detector programs, then there could be keyloggers installed on unchecked systems that can make off with username and password details, not good at all New one found on 1st Jan 2005: Backdoor.Zins More Info: (Using URL shortening website) http://digbig.com/4cjsw be sure to keep virus definitions up to date |

I am running the Microsoft prog. as mentioned above, and Ad-aware, simultaneously. They seem to run quite happily together and there is no conflict ... each is a little slower of course. -- Gianna www.buchan-meteo.org.uk |

At least it prompted me to upgrade to the latest version of Ad-Aware which promptly found a few more creepy-crawlies. Jon. |

I will continue with both for a while anyway. -- Gianna www.buchan-meteo.org.uk |

Oh sorry about that, Jon. I hadn't checked which OS's were supported but now see it is Win2K, WinXP and Windows Server 2003 only:-( -- Mike 55.13°N 6.69°W Coleraine posted to uk.sci.weather 06/01/2005 23:09:53 UTC |

would strongly recommend these spyware detector programs to keep a clean system I've tried three adware and spyware removal packages and none have managed to remove the adware I had on my computer. I had to jibble with my registry settings to find the list of applications that are launched on running and remove those that looked suspicious. If you don't know what a .exe file does and it being launched on startup, Googling for it might throw up a few ideas. One tip that I found useful: adware tends to install itself at the same time (the time that you visited a dodgy website or opened a dodgy e-mail) - if you can find a file related to that adware, do a search for other files created or modified at about the same time. That worked wonders for me and I am confident that I have no ad/spyware on my machine at the moment. -- Jonathan Stott Canterbury Weather: http://www.canterburyweather.co.uk/ |

That worked wonders for me and I am confident that I have no ad/spyware on my machine at the moment. Good idea. This is a regimen set out in the AVG forum: First of all open the programmes menu with the start button. Go to accessories and look for disk clean up. Right click on it and send it to your desktop. This can remove all your temp files which include the cookies that adservers set and any that have been thrown in the bin. Run this regularly. Next go into control panel and see if you have got Java plug in. If so right click on that and send it to the desk top. If you haven't got it, get it. Sun microsystems is the place. You need this to access the net as ActiveX has been taken over by them. Some trojans will reside in the cache of this thing, so open the plug-in and clear the cache. Run this one regularly too. Get CWShredder, AdAware, the latest vesion of SpyBot S&D an antivirus such as AVG and update them all after downloading them. You also want a firewall, Zone Alarm is a good free version. Once the firewall is installed and set to the highest security, switch off your internet connection and run the other stuff in the order they appear here. Line them up on your desktop and use them every day if you go online. I tickled it a bit. If you know your way around cab files you might be able to set it up to run the whole thing automatically while you are sleeping or something. I got a free antivirus and an imitation ZoneAlarm with the SP I disk Microsoft sent me. They were ok in a crap sort of way and my computer was allegic to micrsoft updates so they went the way of all flesh. Of course if you are using Linux or UNIX you can just go ahead without any of this stuff. -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |
