I have taken the plunge....some tender French Bean plants are now out
in the garden. What's the chance of them being caught by a late frost ? Am I crazy or a shrewd optimist ? Going off previous years I would be surprised if we don't get another ground frost or two, but an air frost...not so sure! Richard. -- Dartington, South Hams, Devon. 100 ft AMSL. 50' 12N, 03' 24W. |

I really would not put anything tender out until the last week in May. I've even known a frost in early June that has caught outdoor tomatoes John |

Last air frost early June, first mid September. I suspect Devon will be a touch kinder. Richard,
Well, in the last 16 years. I've only ever recorded 3 air frosts in April, and none this late. Last years geraniums which over wintered OK are in full flower now. But, of course, you live up in England. Still no sign of anything particularly cold. Graham Penzance |

My definition of spring has now occurred viz 14 consecutive days with the
20cm soil temperature 6C or more taken at 09.00hrs GMT. However I do not "cast my clout"( put out the tender plants and take my vest off) 'til the average date of the May blossom in my area ie mid May. Before that air frosts have occurred in 8 Mays from 1979 at my station including 11th May last year. A slight grass frost can easily be covered by fleeces, newspapers etc. Ian Currie- Coulsdon www.frostedearth.com "John Horobin" wrote in message ... "Richard Orrell" wrote in message ups.com... Last air frosts 11th & 12th May last year, though a few nights after that were close. -- David Mitchell, 70m amsl, Langtoft, East Riding of Yorkshire. |

![]() Will Hand wrote: In the Devon mountains we get ground frosts well into June. In the Berkshire lowlands I've recorded air frost as late as 9 June (in 2001) and ground frost as late as 21 June (in 2004). We have learned the hard way not to put out our tender plants until at least the third week of May, and even then be prepared to cover them or move them back into the conservatory on chilly nights well into June. Not yet recorded ground frosts here in July but occasionally in August (earliest 1 August, in 1986). My site is towards the bottom of a rural valley but not in a hollow. Reading University, a town-centre site 10 km distant, records grass minimum temperatures similar to mine throughout the year and has recorded very occasional ground frosts in July in the last 30 years: the former Met Office site at Beaufort Park near Bracknell regularly recorded ground frosts in July, in a sandy-soil forest clearing. I can't honestly say I've ever seen even a sharp ground frost damage plants significantly though, it needs an air frost to do that IMHO ... Stephen |
