Can anyone remember what the temperatures were the preceding night
before the big 38.5c day? Joe Hunt emailed me earlier to say it was 27c at 0830Z at Gatwick when he flew into the UK on that day. Seeing the 19c forecast for tonight I can't believe any records will be broken, I would have thought overnight minima of 21-23c might be a sound base for the record to go, but 19c? Any thoughts? My 2359BST temp August 9th was 25Cand the overnight min.was 19.9C,quite
unlike this current heatwave ,clear blue skies (presumably pollutant free),remarkable visibility (see Philip Edens Whipsnade ob yesterday),and comparativly cool overnight temps ,ie after midnight.,my min this morning 15.9C, max yesterday 30.4C.. I can't actually remember such a dry ,clean heatwave ever before ,the sun feels particularly hot .Is that just my fancy ,or do any of the solar temp recorders have comparable figures ?. Finally sorry for those unfortunates who dislike high summer ,perhaps you should console yourselves with the fact that 99% of the year is normally either wet ,cloudy, cold or grey ,and let us sunlovers enjoy our transient outdoor life .No,I'm not a naturist ! I'd go with Martin's analysis (posted at 16.01 yesterday). The only thing I would add is that temperatures on the near continent yesterday were widely a good 5 degC lower than on the equivalent day (i.e. 2 days before) the peak of the UK 2003 heatwave. Richard On that basis my minimum last night of 10.4°C should ensure that today is no more than pleasantly warm but it's rather more than that, although only about 1 deg C warmer than yesterday at the same time. The low minimum was the product of calm conditions, clear sky, dry ground and dry air, not only at the surface. The rapidity of the initial rise this morning once the sun had got up indicates that only a very shallow layer of air had cooled down and is almost totally irrelevant in forecasting the day's max, at least in summer. The minimum here occurred at approx 0500 Z, ¾ hour after sunrise and the rapid climb took place just before 06Z. All this seems rather late. The area is elevated but fairly flat. Would anyone like to comment? Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, NE Surrey, 556 ft. TQ 3516 5955 |

Joe Hunt emailed me earlier to say it was 27c at 0830Z at Gatwick when he flew into the UK on that day. .... I made a note of the Beaufort Park (Easthampstead Park) 03763 data over that period, as I was checking my own figures at the time. BP day maximum on the 10th August, 2003 was 36.1°C, following a night minimum of 14.4°C. Here at Tawfield (not too far away, but in a non-standard environment, i.e. classic suburban back garden, with buildings too close to allow for direct comparison) the day maximum on the 10th was 35.6°C, following an overnight minimum of 16.6°C. We are, on average, 1.3degC warmer than BP for *minima*, but as you can see from the above, in extreme conditions, the difference is much greater.
