Default September temperatures

This morning's speculation on TV that some places might record their warmest
September day since 1949 prompted me to search out my readings for that
year. In 1949 I was taking 3 readings a day from a single thermometer nailed
to a north facing side of a wooden shed. The lunch time ( probably around
1300 BST) temperature on 4 September was 29c and on the 5th it was 28.5c.
Today at 1300 ( BST) my screen reading was 28.0c

In 1949 the summery weather continued well into October and I didn't
register a single lunchtime temperature below 16c until 20 October. Autumn
weather arrived abruptly on the 26th when the temperature plunged from 14c
at breakfast time to 9c at lunch.

I used to write a monthly summary of the weather in 1949 and an indicator of
how times have changed since then is that I noted at the end of October a
total of 8 foggy mornings in the month ( I think if I couldn't see the end
of the road - about 200 yards away - when I left home for school at about
9 am I noted fog). I haven't registered 8 mornings with fog in the last 5
years.!

A new September record (starting 1983) here, with 29.0°C.
This occurred rather early (1245Z) and it may well have gone higher but
for some slightly unstable-looking Cu which developed but has now gone.

My records also began around that time, but today peaked at 27.9C, 1C
below my September record on the 4th, last year.

It becomes the latest date on which I've recorded 80F+ though.

My records only go back to 2004! But today was the warmest September day
in that short time. It also saw one of the largest diurnal ranges, going
from 8.7C at around 05Z to 28.7C at about 13Z. The largest diurnal range
I have recorded was 20.3C on 26/27 May last year (11.6C to 31.9C). Today
was the warmest day since 26th July (32.6°C), 47 days ago.

28.1C in Coventry today, making this the hottest September day here
since 1949 - the 5 hottest September days since 1892 have been:-

34.2C 1906
32.3C 1911
30.6C 1898
28.9C 1926,1949
28.8C 1929

In all, 8 September days have been warmer tha today since 1892 - all
before 1949 obviously, so we can't blame today's heat on Global
warming!

I've recently been reading "The English Climate" by CEP Brookes and "A
Century of London Weather", both published in the mid-1950s. It's
noticeable that both books give what would nowadays seem to be a
disproportionate amount of space to fog. There really has been a
remarkable reduction.

Max of 18.2C in Penzance today, only 3 colder days since the 1st June
(lowest being 17.8C). The last 2 days have seen the only persistent
dense sea fog of the year.

All of those three fall within the range that I've extracted old
Cheltenham records for.

Between 1898 & 1911, there were 5 Sep days over 30F

32.6C 8/9/11
32.4C 1/9/06
32.3C 2/9/06
30.9C 7/9/11

Yes, it's odd that that period should have such a number of hot Sep
days.

A new September record here in Coulsdon (1979) with 29.3C ( 29.5C in
Chipstead Valley) and this was warmer than other local readings in 1949.
1906 was significantly warmer, also a little known hot spell in 1898, both
above 33C.
