It seems to the ordinary person as though September has been warmer and
sunnier than August. Is there any possibility of this being the case, and if so when did it last happen? Mark -- |

Mark Yes, it has almost certainly been both warmer and sunnier than August. The CET looks like coming out about 16.6C which will equal the warmest September ever. August CET was 16.4C. Up to yesterday (27th) the total sunshine was 159.5hrs; the total for August was 161.5 so only two more hours needed to equal it. The last time Spetember was warmer than August was in 1956. Not sure about sunshine. Take a look at http://www.climate-uk.com for lots of useful information, including the data I quoted above. Rob |

We'll see in 2 days if it makes it... Maybe next year I'll book my time off in September! ;-) Mark -- |

Mark -- No ordinary people here, Mark, so we can't really say. Seriously, September will certainly turn out to be warmer than August, at least here in Surrey. The mean temperature for August was 16.2°C and September is currently running at 17.5°C. This has not occurred before in my 23-yr record. In the Central England Temperature series the only occasions back to 1800 when September has been warmer than August have been 1956 (0.8°), 1890 (0.5°) and 1865 (1.2°). In 1985 the temperatures were the same. This will probably turn out to be the warmest September in the entire series back to 1659.
