Default warm end to Octobers (are there any precedents?)

OK. So the end of this month is feeling exceptionally warm...Does
anybody know of many precedents where warmth late in October was
followed by decently cold winters?

I can remember a couple of occasions recently where snow in Scotland in
October was followed by a diastrous winter. Similarly in the late
1980s...

I don't know about specifically the end of the month, but October, 1995
was very mild overall and was followed by a cold winter. But I doubt
that there's much if any correlation between October temperatures and
those in winter.

One I remember was October 1978 which was much warmer than average
followed by a very mild first 23 days of November max temps mostly
ranging from 10c to 18c then it suddenly changed on the 24th with some
snow on the 25th and frosts until the end of the month. Snow lying for
the last 5 days with a minimum of -5 on the 28th and a low maximum of
-1.1c on the 30th!
What followed was the brilliant cold and very snowy winter of 1979 with
snow lying on all 59 days of January and February, and there was even
snow falling on the first 5 days of May with snow lying on the 2nd!
May 1979 is still the coldest on record here (1960-2006)

Must point out that both October and November 1978 were not only very
mild but also very dry unlike this October which has already seen over
100mm of rainfall for the 7th time in 9 years!

I remember that well. I was at Harper Adams agriculturual college at the
time and the met man there predicted a very cold winter based on that month
I think. It was very warm and dry I remember and I regard it as the last
really cold winter as it was so persistant - the cold weather kept on coming
back even in April and May.

As silly season get's underway

I'm still in t-shirts here at the end of October

Once upon a time, the family would be lighting those coal / log fires
by the end of September

Rather than continually moaning about it, I think you should move.

13.2°C here with very wet drizzle but, as my #2 son said this morning,
'it's still beautiful...'.

Well said, I frequently wonder why the smug git has so many acolytes, or
why he is so readily tolerated with his self satisfied "Haytor" reports.

A Manc who's moved to the country, big deal. There's plenty of us (me
for example) who live in far wilder places than Devon. Devon for Pete's
sake, a lovely county but hardly the last frontier.

Fingers crossed the next time he gets a half inch of snow his sledge
will take him headlong over a ridge. Oooops forgot, it's Dartmoor, not
much risk there then.
