So another cold snap bites the dust. The good thing about being a mild
weather lover is that my wishes keep coming true this winter.

I mean who the hell wants to be cold?

Not me, not me! I quite like this weather, but you and I are considered
somewhat strange cos we don't like the frost and snow.

A kindered spirit, how nice! Since becoming a vegan I have lost a lot of
weight and now have very little body fat. I really feel the cold from
October to May. This week has been lovely, the previous week I was way
too cold.

Graham, I've had too much feeling cold in the past to want to return.
Growing up in an unheated farm cottage did for me...

Rob, Graham, we know that and we don't mind! What you guys don't seem to get
is that we don't all like feeling cold either. We just happen to think that
constant cloud, damp, drizzle and 6-7C actually FEELS colder. It makes us
miserable.Being cheerful folks we prefer beautiful blue skies, crisp frosts
and a snowfall that makes everywhere so bright and cheery and is different
and great fun for kids.

Why doesn't a mild forecast suddenly turn cold? It always seems to be
the other way around! There's probably a good meteorological answer to
this, anyone?

On the radio this morning I distinctly heard the forecaster saying that
a cold easterly will become established next week - but I can't see it
on any chart. I'm sure something weird is going on...

Because everyone is looking for the cold forecast.. if there was ever a
possibily of a mild spell turning cold, people here and especially on TWO
would be ramping it as the next arctic invasion!

In Winter, true enough I think. If a few of us started looking for
"warm" runs on the GFS and posting whenever we saw one at 7 to 10 days
out, I wonder if they, too, would usually disappear as we got closer?

What we need is an archive of operational runs at, say, 5 and 10 days
out - to compare with the Wetterzentrale analysis archive. Then, we
could back-test our theories; does anyone know of such an archive? If
not, perhaps we should start our own?

A very good idea and very instructive. I started doing it
myself for a time with the 120-hr Met Office forecasts. Sometimes they
were uncannily accurate, at other times quite misleading. Anything
further out than 120 hr would naturally show less of the former and
more of the latter.
I do find that the Exeter 120 and 132 hr charts often have an
unreal look about them in things like the shapes of features even
though the positions may be fairly good.

Well I did save the GFS of 1st Dec for Thursday 21st Dec and then looked at
the same chart on 21st Dec. Surprise, surprise - it didn't bear any
resemblance whatsoever.
