Default They're are it again!

Helen Willets this lunchtime on BBC1 warning us to watch out for the
weekend. Yes you guessed it cold weather. I really think forecasts
should be no further than 2 days ahead, would have saved a lot of
embarrassment this Winter.

Default Michael Fish and his "Siberian blast" - from early January 2005

Lest we forget that Michael Fish still owes us one Siberian blast.;-)

I've only looked at them - the models - VERY briefly today, but it
*seems* that hope is once again on the horizon.:-)

Hudson should be *very* interesting tonight for the North. Maybe
yesterday's forecast will have been revised, who knows?:-o ;-)

She also made a big thing of "turning up the thermostat" at the weekend.
Whilst other quarters are urging us to turn them down for "green" reasons.
Let's just leave them as they are, and to hell with the consequences!.
I thought that the whole point of a thermostat was to retain an even
temperature at any given setting, anyway.
They'll be telling us not to forget to wear our vests, next (or have they
already done that?)

It is my view that some / many / most people have no clue how central
heating works, and I have a lovely example which I hope will amuse (I
shall refer to the 'person in question' as X).

X lived in a small, well insulated modern bungalow in England. Most
waking hours were spent in the kitchen/diner - the sitting room was
seldom used.

The thermostat was in the sitting room and to avoid wasting money
heating a room that wasn't much used, it was set to about 15 degrees.
The door was kept shut so once the room was up to temperature, the
heating would of course remain off almost permanently.

X was much annoyed that the central heating would not work as the
remainder of the bungalow got colder and colder. The solution was to
turn the boiler temperature to maximum and 'boost' the heating control.

The result of this was radiators that were dangerously hot, water that
would take off the skin, and rooms that fluctuated from rather too hot
to rather too cold, depending on when the 'boost' was manually cancelled.

The entire system was turned off in 'summer' regardless of the length
and severity of any cold spells ... if a coat was needed indoors, the
system would be switched on and boosted, then switched off again.

I should hastily add that X was in no way related to the weather person
who is referred to by 'CK'.

I believe that Helen forecast a maximum of as low as 9c for the South on
Sunday before things start warming up again.

Regards, Roger

I'd love Helen to spend a month or two with me up here and then I could show her
some proper cold weather.

Yours disgusted of Haytor :-)

ME! ME!;-) :-o

Seriously, though, we need to get mercenaries up there in order to
fight the Chinese, and protect the lands of eastern Slavia from the
invaders, defend the graves of our ancestors from the onslaught of
Sinitic feet, reclaim the Kurils, etc..
