Default Where's all this rain, then?

There is a Severe Weather Warning out for SE England (except
Sussex) for heavy rain. Also, on R4 1257 pm some gushing girlie
mentioned a couple of inches of rain (I think) for SE England this
afternoon and evening. So far I've had 5.2 mm today, none of it
heavy, and it has not been raining for the last two hours. Looking at
the radar I can't quite see where this professed deluge is coming
from. Can anybody else?

It was quite heavy in Blackheath before lunch, heavy enough to soak an
underpruned hawthorn in full blossom and nearly collapse it...

14mm here so far - most in a single rain event since Sep 29th 2006. Of
course it's also cricket day so that's two matches gone already!

Outside my door currently. 23.6mm from this event so far in Penzance.
11.5mm in the early hours, the rest since 11:00 today.

More significant is the cold, force 6-7 northerly, gusting 40-50mph.
After reaching 12.5C this morning (making it the lowest max since 4th
April) it's currently (16:20) a thoroughly dismal 9.3C.

Up here, Tudor ... it looks as though the narrow band of
heavy rain is pivoting on Luton ... 65RA for over two hours
now, and the A505 main road between Luton and Dunstable
has an impassable flood under the old Dunstable Town railway
bridge; there are several minor floods elsewhere. Negotiating
Bison Hill was a bit like driving up a river. If I've not misread
the Dynes TSR by 5 or 10mm, we've so far had ~22mm and
it's still chucking it.

Pretty dismal here, though no doubt the grass and weeds will perform
extraordinarily well this week.

14mm in St Albans so far and it was very heavy in the early afternoon at
20mm/hr probably from the same narrow band that is now pivoting on Luton.
Currently raining very lightly.

Only 5.3mm here in Guildford Tudor. Worries me a bit as Martin in Tawfield
had had 8.0mm by breakfast!

No heavy rain either.

..... classic problem for guidance-meisters: you can see the very narrow
band of heavy rain currently lying in an arc from Suffolk (through PE I
should think) to Salisbury Plain - not moving very far and some places
along that line must be getting some tremendous totals: either side, a
rather 'flatter' PPN profile, with marked variability: haven't read the
18Z rainfall yet (will post it in the thread relating to forecast
rainfall), but probably only ~5mm for the day so far.

Martin.
