Colin Youngs Brussels I've just returned from Wootton, IOW (opposite side to St. Catherine's Point shown above) where 60.7mm fell in the 24 hour period 27/0900-28/0900Z, the wettest such period in any month since 31 July 1978. The rain was relentless, mostly in the heavy category but never torrential. Total rainfall for the 48 hour period ending 28/0900Z was 67.0mm. The local track to Woodside (extends 1 mile north) was virtually impassable on foot this morning without wellies, a scene typical of a wet winter. Two days ago the entire track was bone dry. Where the ground was not flooded, it was carpeted in tree debris (one caravan crushed by a fallen tree). On the coast at 0930Z, the wind was straight off the choppy Solent from due north, mean 31kt, gusts 41kt using a hand-held anemometer. Combined with a temp of +7C, this yielded a wind chill equivalent of minus 5C, great for the holidaymakers! Ski jackets were the order of the day. Nigel (Romsey, Hampshire) |

The total rainfall for the event (48 hour period) here in West Fareham (less than 10 miles N/NW of Wootton) was a mere 30.7 mm. Quite a difference. -- Dave Fareham (West) |
