As one reader of the BBC web site wrote from his 'home' in Tooting ...

"I have never seen rain like it. I have just been in the garden, trying to get
the water out."

Funny people down there in the south.

One of the problems in London is that so many people have paved or
concreted their gardens over, either for car standing or perhaps just
because they hate nature, who can tell.
Well, one upside of the wetness is that I have only applied water to my
allotment by hand twice this year, whereas last year I was up there
every morning at 6 and often again in the evenings just trying to keep
it moist enough for things to survive.
The downside this year has been poor germination, particularly of beans,
poor pollination, tomato blight in the greenhouse, and of course it is
lovely weather for slugs...

Actually it became so much like a Cecil B Demille movie around 12:30 (over
cast), that I was just about to break my self-imposed protocol and post
from work in Dulwich SE London. I know human perception is easily fooled
and memories very subjective but I could not recall ever seeing it so dark
and as the deluge followed I suddenly remembered how prone to flooding our
basement was. I rushed downstairs warning all to get prepared for the
ensuing flood as the sewers and drainage system reached full capacity and
believe me they did-mind you not as bad as last June but the three basement
offices are now unusable as the carpets had to be ripped up.

This was our third flood in as many years, I have to say that though that
due to the increasingly rising population in London's suburbs that the old
drainage system just can't process all that increasing run-off coupled
with rising sewer usage.

Why didn't UKMO warn us with red graphics ???????

Will I was joking, I'm always on about their bloody graphics. Turned out
this time though that they were right, to be honest we've all followed the
warnings( where I work) there's been so many it just became a case of
"whatever". The boy who cried "wolf " somes to mind..
Strangley enough I called a firm in South Wales who deal in portable
floodgates they were a little cynical of the OTT warning as well and they
sell the bloody things. I don't know maybe it's me, maybe we all need to put
up floodgates every time the red warnings go up.

Sadly I did have a loopy moment of almost grabbing my dds toy bucket to
bail out the water rising round the house. Then realised 'where would I
put it?'
Funny how a mini crisis can induce insanity!

Bale it into the Thames Water/Southern Water reservoirs as I can hear the
cries now for 2008 summer!

You are under a Drought Order, please do not run baths, water your garden,
wash your car unless you're a shareholder in Tescos, a Gym Member, Cinema
goer, an out of town development shareholder, whatever, big business will be
the survivors, never the little guys.

Rant over and off to bed.

Patio less Tony who has a nice grassy surbuban garden with only just soggy
patches.

It was pretty gloomy but I can recall off the top of my
head three instances of real daytime darkness associated with
thunderstorms, 5 Sept 1958, Aug 6(?)1981 and Aug 3 1986. They were
all darker than today, unless Dulwich is truly in the Styx. It didn't
look particularly dark towards London from here.
