BBC: now mentioned in Breaking News. Likely this has made BBC News 24 by
now - suspect lots of pundits talking about living in the globally
warmed hell that is Britain and we didn't get freak mini tornados 30
years ago when we were all going to freeze to death

No mention of MTs on the Daily Mail Website:

TORRO have a tornado watch valid today but this will be the CF passage...

http://www.torro.org.uk/torro/forecast/index.php

Satellite imagery shows quite a pronounced dry slot on the back of that
CF - the first anafront of the autumn??

Yes exactly. These sort of ana cold fronts can spawn tornadoes along
their length (and it was quite an active long cold front), so the BBC
News article doesn't come as a surprise.

The long lost Dave Reynolds (formerly/still?) of TORRO I recall was
writing something on the 24th October 1995 cold front that had several
tornadoes along it.

Cheers
Richard

Has it been windy today ;-) That would explain why my flight back in to
Luton tonight seemed to wobble and land on one wheel. Not much change from
the force 9 on mini cruise (is mini cruise ok?) around the Greek Islands
over the weekend. Why was that? Jannis?

I have installed an AWS in Luton, a km or so from my long-standing
manual station, in order to provide a long overlap before it finally has
to go. As luck would have it, it's just 350m from the site of the alleged
tornado sighting. I had a poke around the area this morning, and found
no damage visible from the street around Black Swan Lane where the
reports came from. There was no damage in the vicinity of the AWS
either, but the data showed it to be a pretty impressive ana cold front.
My inclination is to ascribe the damage to straight-line winds, until and
unless evidence on-site demonstrates otherwise. The damage area,
as far as I can ascertain is, at a maximum, 5m x 30m, and probably
a good bit less than that.
I've uploaded graphs from the AWS he

The anemometer is only 2m above ground-level but it's reasonably
well exposed to the south and west.
