Shallow fog was quite clearly in evidence across the New Forest as I
passed through on the train at around 7pm tonight.

The fog was still there this morning (7am) - particularly dense east of
Brockenhurst with visibility less than 50m in places (although hard to
judge from a train doing 90mph!).

Still misty at 8:30 am driving from Wimborne to Ringwood. Now, 2 pm,
bright sunshine and light 3 octa clouds.

Can any one explain why morning mist and fog is more likely in the
autumn than at other times of year?

Cheers, Alastair.

It may be because the ground is relatively warm still and, pressure
high, with little wind ( nothing here in a Dorset valley), which
always seems a feature at some stage in autumn
