Default Birmingham Snow

Notice there was recent snow at Birmingham airport this morning according to
the 0420Z METAR :-

EGBB 040420Z 00000KT 0700 FG VV/// 03/03 Q1030 RESN

They did well to spot it in the fog.

Default Birmingham Snow

Mistake i think, no snow here in Dudley about 8-10 miles away from B'ham
city centre, about 20 miles from the airport. If not, it must have been
localised.

While it was quite chilly (+1C) by dawn at the surface the profiles
(e.g. Watnall 00Z
http://weather.uwyo.edu/cgi-bin/soun...400&STNM=03354 )
didn't support precipitation, let alone anything frozen.

Looking at the sequence I suspect some moisture was being deposited due to
the fog and the automatics registered this as snow between 0150Z and 0250Z.
The then derived recent snow (RESN) got left on the manual ob at 0420Z

EGBB 040420Z 00000KT 0700 FG VV/// 03/03 Q1030 RESN
EGBB 040250Z AUTO 00000KT 0900NDV FG VV/// 02/01 Q1030 RESN
EGBB 040220Z AUTO VRB02KT 0250NDV -SHSN VV/// 02/02 Q1030 RESN
EGBB 040150Z AUTO 00000KT 1000NDV BR VV/// 03/02 Q1030

Roll on Christmas :-)
