Yes, it has also been chilly in Sturry, near Canterbury - maximum of 4
degrees C today, but not enough to melt the ground frost!

No rainfall here since the 10th - 39mm so far this month, how about you
Jonathan?

Today's maximum looks set to be 2.9C (unless it clouds over and warms up
overnight). This is the lowest daily maximum since 23 Feb 2006.

Temperature is currently dropping like a stone, down to -3.1C at 1840Z.

No rainfall here since the 10th - 39mm so far this month, how about you

31.5mm here, again no rain since the 9th/10th. Some precipitation has
been recorded in the form of dew/frostmelt.

How are you calculating the means? Most of them seem to diverge from the
traditional (min+max)/2.

Mean maximum this month is 8.6C; mean minimum 2.2C; mean 5.4C.

Which I would imagine is close to average.

Daily means are still calculated by integration from 5-minute resolution
data. Monthly means (quoted below) are from an average of (min+max)/2.
On my website I quote both monthly means by integration and (min+max)/2.

There are many arguments for and against the two different methods - I'm
sure someone with more experience can explain better than me! I believe
that the integration method produces a figure much closer to the true
mean but the (min+max)/2 method is traditional and to be used when
comparing historical data.

Mean maximum this month is 8.6C; mean minimum 2.2C; mean 5.4C.

Mean for Wye (about 10 miles or so to the SW at similar altitude) is
about 5.3C for December.

You've explained it well. Personally, I think that the need to maintain
comparability with historical data is the more important factor.

Here in Whipsnade, largely thanks to our altitude (214m),
today (Weds) has been the sixth consecutive day with a
max between 2 and 3°C.

Temperature now (2135Z) -5.0C and still falling steadily at a rate of
0.7 degrees per hour. Coldest December night since I started recording
in 2004 (OK, not that much!).

-3.4C here at 10.30pm. Falling steadily - if it stays clear I'm sure it will
be the coldest night so far.
