I know I should just ignore it, but what on earth is all this stuff
about MI5 persecution etc? Some nutter seems to be cluttering up the
newsgroups with posts and there's little that seems to be happening
about it.

Martin.

He's a kook from some other group - I've seen him post in a few other groups
I subscribe to.

As to what you can do...apart from killfiling him, I really don't know.

It's just another - though massively more annoying - form of Spam

The M15 guy has been around for years.
He is one of the most celebrated (if that's the right word)
loons on the whole of Usenet.
Every so often he goes through a phase of mass crossposting
although I don't think he's ever posted to this group before.

His name is Mike Corley and he has been around for quite a few years
now. He does seem to have recently expanded his horizons and is
posting to a more varied selection of newsgroups so, perhaps, he has
just become more visible.

He has got mentions on WikiPedia and there are a number of web pages
that explain (as far you can for someone like him) what he is on
about. For example,

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/A164404

FWIW, some news servers (news.individual.net for one) are very good at
automatically deleting the posts. I very rarely get to see Mike's
diatribes these days.

He has long accounted for a disproportionate number of the kill-rules in
Turnpike here. Hadn't realised he'd become even more of an irritation.
Usually only see his stuff when others quote it. There's probably a
novelty book for the Christmas market in it if any journalist has the
spare time and masochism.

Two minutes later. Tend to look at the headers for and decide what to
open and read - hadn't realised just how many of his witterings were
there to be ignored and just had not been perceived. See what you mean.
Liberty, free speech and all that, but he really is a thundering bore.

Assuming that it is the outpourings of one poor soul, rather than a
committee of trolls.
