Default Latest forecast, flooding and a vocabulary question

The latest forecast from Environment Canada is for 25 to 35 mm of rain
for eastern Ontario by tomorrow night. There will be flooding along
creeks (North American definition) and rivers with the snowmelt.

Speaking of definitions, what is a "trunk road"? How does it differ
from a motorway?

Bob

Good old wikipedia "A trunk road, trunk highway, or strategic road is a
major road—usually connecting one or more cities, ports, airports,
etc.—which is the recommended route for long-distance and freight traffic.
Many trunk roads have segregated lanes in a dual carriageway, or are
motorway standard."
Hope that helps.

My understanding is that in the UK a trunk road is one which is
maintained by national/central government, while other roads are
maintained by the local authority.

Trunk roads include motorways, many dual carriageways and major
single-carriageway roads.

Motorways have blue signs and trunk roads have green signs.
Other roads have black-on-white signs.

See other posts with the addition that some types of vehicle are not
allowed on motorways, mainly slow moving things like horse drawn vehicles
and agricultural tractors. Pedestrians are also not allowed. A motorway
will also have a "hard shoulder" for use in emergency and to allow
emergency vehicles access when the carriageways are all nose to tail after
an RTC.

Odd name isn't it. It seems widely used for all the main arteries in
what remains of the colonies even of routes that were ancient before
we came along.

As the others have said. The origin is probably from the trunk of a
tree, the main part of the plant. The side branches are the side roads.

Green signs indicate primary routes. These are not always coincidental
with trunk roads, although they usually tend to be.
