Default Is it really Jan?

+14.9C maximum so far today in Stogursey. Mild, dull, damp with the odd
break in cloud.

Sadly yes, and I'm off for a weeks skiing in the Alps. With freezing
levels expected to be over 3000 metres and the dreaded Barlett High
sitting over head, it's going to be a washout. Although there will be
some radiation cooling overnight I suspect its not going to be enough
to offset significant melt! Yuk wish I wasn't going now.

Is it my imagination or does the GFS seem to underestimate
temperatures? Each run over the past couple of days has got slightly
warmer until the forecast has reached the near term.

Where are you off to? Morzine was warm but skiable last week....

Les Arcs 2000, yes at 2000m.
This week is going to be warmer still. There are a couple of chances
that ridges will form over the UK allowing colder air to drain down,
but the GFS seems to overplay these. Meteo France is going for maximum
temperature of +7 on Sunday for Meribel Buring [2040m]. That's
completely insane. I can't see that damn Barlett high shifting so if
it's like that all week it's going to be miserable.

You'd be far better off in Scotland :-)
But yes Mr Bartlett is taking residence over the Alps, warm and sunny :-(

Not very seasonal here in Cheshire, either. Max of 13.7 (VP2) today and
still 13.5 as I write, much warmer than this morning despite (or perhaps
because of?) a westerly wind (humidity dropped sharply as the temperature
rose - is this a Foehn effect?).

Still only one air frost this month, and that a mere -0.7 on the 3rd.
Rainfall already past the 30-year average [1], the fields round here are
saturated so we can expect some floods this weekend.

Flies buzzing around, too - it's Winter, Jim, but not as we know it.
