Hoar frost on May the first, indicates a good harvest.
An east wind in May, it's your duty to pray. Thunderstorms in May and the farmer sings 'Hey, Hey' 11th - 13th May do not pass without a frost 17th - 19th May occasions a cold blast of air blighting apple trees. Warwick April 2008 Avg 9.0C (1C higher than 30 yr avg for this area) 65mm rain (40% higher) |

Presumably there was a collection of parish records of tithes or something for a scrivener to come to this conclusion? But what conclusion? He wouldn't have known about the Norwegian school of thought and that the first saw is about and anticyclone over the UK and the second is one of an anticyclone over Iceland and a Low over Scandinavia. And he could only have been going by market records for the long term forecast even if he did. So does it work? It has obvious connotations to flowering and pollination but these lores are also present in earlier months and apply to large animals too, not just flowers. |

We were -0.1C down the road in Coventry, and although I live in Warwick, and extol its virtues, it didn't feel any warmer than Coventry!' Rainfall-wise we are very close with 67.4mm in Coventry compared to your 65mm. See the website for full stats and facts! Hello Steve
Many thanks yours & noted the Bablake figures for April. I certainly cannot verify my figures as they are unofficial. I continue to monitor (on a daily basis) Bablake, Dorridge & Wellesbourne for temperature and rainfall figures - as a check for local anomalies and better understanding. Having queried Wellesbourne on their rainfall, they are currently carrying out experiments with varying devices - but it seems their rainfall is significantly less than others in this area - interesting! Dorridge records higher max figures, but less rainfall than Warwick. This latter fact is surprising as I am in the area twice daily on most days (passing through Hatton) and rainfall there seems to be more frequent and heavier than Warwick (ditto Hatton). Whatever... I have for Warwick the following April temp figures Max Min 2008 1st - 15th 13.26 2.47 2008 16th - 30th 14.75 5.56 the min was sig. higher 2008 April avge 14.01 4.01 1971-2000 avge 12.8 3.2 2008 April mean 9.01 1971 - 2000 mean 8.0 Diff 1.01 Finally.. Passing through Hatton, I note my car outside temperature is consistently lower than Warwick 7 minutes earlier :-) Regards Peter J "Steve J" wrote in message ... Our 30 year averages (1971-2000) suggest an average of 0.9 days with fog in March, and 0.7 days with frost in May. How about a "hot May makes a fat churchyard"? Doubt we could find a correlation there these days!!! Steve Jackson Bablake Weather Station Coventry UK www.bablakeweather.co.uk |
