Andrew Neill - a respected journalist - stated on his BBC lunchtime show on,
I think, Thursday, that "Average global temperatures have fallen in each of
the last ten years by an average of 0.3 degrees C". He quoted four sources
including NASA.

Comments from knowledgable subscribers would be appreciated.

In any case, he clearly thinks it's too warm, judging by the vest he's

He quoted what seemed to be reputable sources including NASA - perhaps Mr
Sunderland will discount them as biassed Americans

Repsected journalist maybe, but hardly a respected
meteorologist. If what he says is true the temperature will have
fallen 3°C since 1998, indicating the onset of something rather
fearsome and what's more taking the graph right off scale low. There
are few numerate journalists and he would not seem to be one of them.
Something nearer the truth can be seen he

That appears to be a claim that temperatures have fallen by 3 degrees
over the last 10 years. That would be ridiculously incorrect. So I
presume that something else is meant, but I'm baffled as to what. The
average of post-1998 record is, estimated by eye, about 0.1 degrees
below the 1998 figure.

The fall between 1998 and 2007 is about 0.15 degrees. If you select 1995
or 2000 as your starting point instead, there is a rise of over 0.15
degrees. (Interannual variation in temperatures is of comparable
magnitude.)

So the status quo is maintained. That's all right then - isn't it?

Andrew Neill is only respected by himself.

There have been two years that were warmer than 1998 - 2005 and 2007. Taking
running means to smooth out the graph shows me that temperatures are still
rising and the rate of that rise is 0.25C per decade.

.... it's a case of the old journalistic rule: " never let the facts
get in the way of a good story ": see this graph, which is, note, a
NASA based dataset and is widely respected:-

1998 was an oddity in some respects, due to the strength of the El
Nino (warm) event that year - the overall trend is upwards - see also
