Di Bernardo writes When is the earliest time that the Midlands could see snowfall? Looking back at records dating back to 1892, we have never had a snow fall in Coventry during September. However, we recorded snowfall during October in 1892 (2 days), 1895, 1896, 1909 with snow lying at 0900hr, 1934, & 1941. haven't got exact dates at home but could look them up on Monday if you need them. -- Steve Jackson, Bablake Weather Station, Coventry, UK http://www.netlink.co.uk/users/bws |

![]() ================================================== ================== This posting expresses the personal view and opinions of the author. Something which everyone on this planet should be able to do. ================================================== ================== Hi Steve, I would say snow was virtually impossible in September in the Midlands due to the seas still being relatively warm. It would need one heck of an Arctic blast and below average sea temperatures in the north and probably a very heavy shower to bring down the wet-bulb freezing level. Same would probably go for July and August as well. Now you're going to tell me of the great July snowstorm of .... ![]() "Michael Di Bernardo" wrote in message ... When is the earliest time that the Midlands could see snowfall? The best known example of September snow happened around the 20th in 1919, following a spell of exceptional warmth mid-month. According to a book I have handy: "... by the morning of the 20th snow covered the ground at low levels in Scotland and northern England, with a substantial covering over higher ground throughout Wales and also over Exmoor and Dartmoor. Sleet showers were observed at lower levels as far south as the Thames Valley." Snow was also seen lying on the slopes of the Black Mountains (SE Wales) down to an altitude of 1300 feet. The Clee Hills in south Shropshire also had a covering, and an observer in Herefordshire noted a sprinkling on the ground at daybreak at 300 ft above sea-level. The higher slopes of Snowdon were snow-covered for a week. You can see the surface synoptic chart he http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten/fsslpeur.html Philip Eden |

Di Bernardo writes When is the earliest time that the Midlands could see snowfall? In Coventry, the earliest we have had since I have personally been observing the weather in the city is 7th November in 1980. As a contrast, the latest was 22nd January in 1988. Last year it was 11th December. We haven't had a November snowfall her since 1996 (19th). -- Steve Jackson, Bablake Weather Station, Coventry www.bablakeweather.co.uk |
