A developing Cb to the south has just unleashed a barrage
of large white hail, making a right din on hard surfaces. The shower commenced at 1615Z with small floating pellets of snow which suddenly turned into hard hitting hail of 7-10cm (measured with ruler) from 1620-1623Z. Now (1630Z) it's back to snow pellets. No rain or snowflakes observed in this shower. Nigel (Romsey, Hampshire) |

It dropped in 20 minutes a very deep layer - maybe 3/4 inch. All day I have been watching the radar animation and generally some beefy showers have crossed Lyme and headed our way. They are supposed to slacken off during the evening. Still some good echoes I see.. I note the Icy advisory for tonight and with a little consternation the further advisories for Thursday/Friday. If it happens it will be a serious dump of snow but it seems to me to be a very very borderline scenario and a nightmare for the MetO who were spot on with the showers today. Last night was very very cold & I don't expect a repeat of the -9.7C - perhaps -3 or 4 There has been an amazing amount of traffic round he lorries delivering heating fuel with pretty optimistic drivers ( I spoke to two) plus the school bus ("obeying orders") but arriving long after the kids had gone. Local A roads were closed for the morning and I fear the heavy snow showers have caused accidents down at Puddletown recently Work finished early so I caught The Cruel Sea on 4. I think a sofa evening beckons and a duty call to the Mrs in Bedford to inform about the dire conditions........ R |

Earlier this winter I was hail-blasted on a walk by 5mm hail in 30+ knots, it hurts!!! :-) 10mm hail - strewth. Will -- |

Still some good echoes I see.. There was a significant snow shower in Southampton this morning that dropped around 1 inch in 30 minutes between 7:30am and 8am. The amount may be slightly skewed as I was at that time walking from Southampton Central towards the Sports Centre up Hill Lane - a moderate height gain. There was snow on and off for most of the day in Southampton but had turned to sleet by about 5:30pm. Just returned back to Bournemouth where there has been further snow recently. A short shower of small hail made the pavements just slippery enough to be annoying on my walk back from the station (6:30pm). No 0.1 metre hail here though :-) Jonathan |

I have been graduallv collecting this genre for some time plus many others of this era as I find them excellent entertainment in bad weather. There are some fantastic bargains around especially now. Recently got a collection which included a superb film portraying a day at Waterloo Station in 1960. More snow-massive flakes now in the latest 'Channel Export' - just got down to 0C R |

The two ships they had (Flower Class corvettes and Castle Class frigates) were the classes that were later used for the Ocean Weather Ships. Fond memories.
