I agree it looks like it's over for this year.
Met office 15 day only going for snow of the hills in the north and GFS
seems to have backed away again

Keep those fingers crossed and winter might stay away until the end of the
year.

The 'lift' in temperatures which often happens around the 20th of February
from the usual 'meandering' background temperatures has happened this year.
It happened last year (though being masked a little by a very warm spell
mid-month) and again in 2007, but not in 2006 when temperatures were held
back by cold easterlies and northerlies, the cold persisted until the last
week of March.

I remember reading about this last week of February 'lifting' of
temperatures in a book by Lamb, but which one it was I don't remember.

February 2006 was actually quite a cold month with a mean temperature of
only 4.2°C and was the coldest month I have recorded since moving here in
the spring of 2005. In contrast, the mean temperature for this February
currently stands at 5.0°C.

Things can change. Not much more than a week ago, the models were
suggesting a cold spell in a week or so's time, which we would by now be
experiencing if they hadn't changed their minds.

Last "winter", for an hour or so we had the most intense snow that I had
seen for many a year, and that happened on a Sunday morning in April.

With a vengeance! oh no, more mass media hype, more chaos on roads, more
disruption to everything that moves, more messages from the eskimos on the
newsgroup that want it to be cold even in
July...................................

Give me a weeks warning and i will book another break away, i managed to
miss the last lot by heading to the south of Spain and there are some good
deals at present.

Yes!!!

8th Feb: 2 weeks ago
9th Feb: 3rd heavy snowfall here in Northampton
17th Feb: At last it was safe to walk on the footpaths without the fear of
slipping over
19th Feb: Still little mounds of snow all over the place where the snowmen
had been standing

No sign of snow around here for the last 3 days.

Footnote: I have experienced more white Easters than white Christmases.
1(1950's)-12 I think. Bunnies with brass balls, anyone?
