Default Wettest July?

Hi, All,

Could this July turn out to be the wettest on my record (1960's) ?

137.2mm so far (09Z16th) and Copley has gone orange for Friday and
Saturday on the Met O warnings. These warnings are usually quite
accurate for us.
Already highest since I began here in 1995, but a bit to go to beat
the 250.4mm in August 2004.

Wettest July around here is 150.6mm in 1988 (Low Etherley site)

Copley still recovering fro the 87.9mm in 2hr 45min on 1st and after a
further 4 days' thunder I don't think the Met O barbecue summer
forecast has gone down too well!

I'll let you know how things go.

.... my reading from latest (and earlier) deterministic output, and
also looking at the various ensemble stuff (ex GFES) is that you are
indeed in line for some prolonged and often heavy rainfall. A way to
go yet, but at minimum an accumulated rainfall of 15-20 mm seems
highly likely, and one GFS run shows local 'spikes' of at least 30 mm
in a 6hr period (as well as the rain before and after).

How are your local rivers etc. running?

Martin.

Hi, Martin,
Thanks for the info.
Our local river is the Gaunless which starts in Copley and it's a fast
riser and faller. During the torrent on 1st the EA river monitoring
gauge at the Lead Mill was zapped by the lightning so the record was
lost and no warning was sent to the lower dale. It was up to bridge
level in some parts for an hour or so.
These thunderstorms are pretty local (had another just now putting
down 4.6mm in 10min) so the three bigger rivers - Tees, Wear and Tyne
seem to be absorbing the flooded tributaries. However, a general heavy
fall such as you describe could lead to widespread flooding as there
is a lot of water running off fields and land is generally saturated.
Best wishes,
Ken

Depends where you are. Not in Norfolk - s'been a lovely month here. One
or two storms, but plenty of warm sunny days with reasonable humidity.

All that rough stuff happens oop-North. It's grim up there you know...

Looking outside - it's another warm and sunny one, with a gentle breeze.
Lovely.

Of course - I failed to see the "my" in the OP - which makes all the
difference (as in "my record") and makes my response look daft.

Too much sun - it's gone to my head!

Hello all you knowledgeable people we are getting to the middle of summer
and it looks like autumn here in the SW. What has happened? Is this it for
the rest of the year? Will this continue for the rest of the year?

Someone who should have booked a holiday in the Med.

Looks like a pretty reasonable, if warmer than average, summer in the
SW so far. Bloody wet down here today, mind! The consensus amongst my
missus, friends, the neighbours and the dogwalkers is that this summer
has been a good one up to this last week. There were some periods of
really good, sunny and warm weather in the SW in June and early July.
Easy to forget that in this cool rain, though! See what August brings
eh - and really, no-one knows for anything like sure!

Aye.

I remember July 2003 which had a hot spell from the 7th - 16th but after
when I decided a week's camping over the border in Cornwall was a good idea
it poured down for the whole week and ended up quite cool.

Got back home and it stayed rainy and cool up to the beginning of August
before turning warm, very warm, hot and then very hot.

Most people remember 2003 as a long, hot summer but they seem to have
forgotten about the cool, rainy bit in the middle.

A wash-out here today.

Not much respite next week either.

Rain, don't you love it, at least you don't get the fog we get as well Nick.
Very gloomy here after the heavy rain with thick fog and a temperature of
11.7C at 1840. What gets me is that we seem to get all the rain with none of
the excitement of thunder. It's quite a while now since we had thunder here
in Haytor.

Roll on winter, at least we still get sledgeable snow up here :-)
