Default The long, er, indifferent summer ....

.... waiting in the queue at M&S Castlepoint (on northern outskirts of
Bournemouth) this morning; rain hammering down (again), wind blowing.

Man in queue ... " raining again - miserable isn't it? "
Lady on till ... " yes, I'm _fed_ up with this weather "
MIQ ... " they promised us a long, hot summer didn't they?"
LOT ... [ loud snort of disgust ] " LIARS: don't believe a word of it
"

I think a bit of proactive damage limitation is going to be required
before too long. Unfortunately, the fact that 'they' didn't in fact
promise a 'long hot summer' has been lost in the gloom of another
soggy July day.

As they used to say of a certain type of journalism, I made my excuses
and left :-(

Martin.

And yet the hot spell ended less than 3 weeks ago!

True Martin, but how many of us turned to our wife/husband, partner,
girlfriend/boyfriend, son/daughter, friend/stranger, neighbour, cat/
dog, work colleague, and groan when the MO issued the now infamous
barbecue summer forecast?

Talk about fuelling the Daily Express braziers!!!

It may come off even yet, but Chinese whispers have already done the
rounds, as your overheard conversation goes to show!

Only 4 dry days so far this month in Coventry so far, though we might
just get a barbecue in next Sunday!

One thing I am getting more than very fed up with is the BBC1 forecast at
6.30 each evening. Nearly every evening they put up a great big placard with
"WEATHER WARNING" plastered on it, but the forecaster, whoever it may be,
declines to tell us exactly why or where this may apply. Since they show the
pressure chart immediately after this announcement, why can't they highlight
the affected area(s) with a caption saying what they "think" (phrased after
some thought!) is going to happen.

In the past, a weather warning usually resulted in about 3 inches of rain in
as many hours, with flooding, devastation and pestilence for all concerned.
These days is seems to mean "Well there might be a bit of rain, or there
might not. To be honest I haven't a damned clue, so I'll issue a weather
warning anyway."

Mind you, now the school holidays have started, I appreciate all this damp
stuff. Firstly, it keeps the little brats indoors out of the way for most of
the time, and secondly, it stops them setting fire to the local woods around
here. We lost a fair chunk of a local nature reserve in 2003 thanks to the
little b******s. Roll on September.

Default The long, er, indifferent summer ....

I remember moving to Coningsby in April 1991.

Went house hunting at beginning of March and the really snowy spell had
ended a week or two before but when we travelled down the Lincolnshire
country lanes snow was still piled up along shady side of the lanes. When we
spoke to people they told us how bad it had been only a few weeks before,
with places cut off.

However in a hot spell in the July of that year I was speaking to some
locals who said we would like it there and that the climate was mild as they
had not had any decent winter snow for years .....

We had in Dorset ( and elsewhere of course) a weather warning on
Sunday afternoon relating to showers. I recorded 0.6mm. This is
perhaps the ninth time in the last year I guess. It is so annoying

We've just had 11.2mm in 45 minutes with *no* warning.

Yep - THREE sets of people saying the same thing two days ago. Where?
On the ferry to Guernsey!
I don't bother to read these outlooks I have to say

Not surprising to see there are others on here who are concerned that
the plethora of weather warnings about severe (or extreme!!) weather
that have been issued recently have resulted in so little severe, or
extreme, weather.

The accuracy of these can only be judged from the outcomes.
Communication about how effective that site is relies on a small part
of an annual report. There's nothing to tell people how likely
something is to happen, apart from saying you have a 60% (early
warning), then an 80% (severe warning) that severe, or even "extreme"
weather is in the offing. How many individuals who have heard a
weather warning in the last 2 weeks (and I've lost track of how many
there have been) have ACTUALLY experienced severe, or extreme weather?
60%? 80%??

Nothing like those percentages have experienced what has been forecast
and I don't need to monitor every severe weather warning to know that.
Everyone knows it.
