just walked around the estate and noticed some houses have monster
icicles hanging off roofs and gutters. also noticed my own property has a build up of smaller ones as well on one side. any ideas on how to prevent these or get rid of them (apart from climbing on the roof) most articles on the net point to poor insulation or heat escape? |

I've a fine crop hanging from my own gutters, the best that I can recall since January 1963. I'd thought they were a thing of the past, as the snow on the roof melts much slower now that we have insulation on the floor of the loft. But there's probably been enough sun to melt some of the snow on the south-facing side. There are some icicles on the north side of the house too, though, which is a bit of a puzzle. Fortunately I have a porch over my front door, so no-one's in danger of being impaled by one. ![]() -- John Hall "Acting is merely the art of keeping a large group of people from coughing." Local thaw as well. Local practice is to use a walking stick or broom from an upper window to dislodge them. Best done early, thick icicles are very strong. -- Peter Thomas |
