![]() Let's forget about 1979 then??????? If you put Dec 2009, Jan 2010 and Feb 2009 as a Winter, it still would not come close to 1979 as regards cold or snow!!!!!!!!!! What a joke! Graham It's the bleedin media (and therefore entertainment) Graham, what did you expect?! Will I know I shouldn't let the media wind me up Will! It really does annoy me when these people can't get their facts right and come up with these stupid programs and even more stupid statements! It's like our local radio station a few days ago saying it's official, January 2010 is the coldest January for 47 years, excuse me there are still 15 days left!!!!! I suppose it's much more dramatic saying the coldest for 47 years than a boring old 30 years. Just to point out a simple little fact the media felt they would overlook, the mean temperature for 1979 WAS -1.2c, and 2010 is now up to -0.1c!! But then again I suppose we could ignore that irritating little fact and agree with the media, January 2010 it is the coldest for 47 years ![]() Rant over ![]() Graham |

Did you notice over the weekend that the media had somehow got the idea that it was going to remain cold till April? If it turns out to be negative then that would be quite remarkable for recent times. No month has had a negative CET since Feb 1986 (-1.1C) and even throughout the series negative months were always pretty rare. -- Col Bolton, Lancashire 160m asl |

"...looks at the big freezes of 1947, 1963 and Febraury 2009" Are they 'avin a laff? Dave Hopefully the makers of the programme will have a bit more clue than whoever put together that blurb. I think they are still making this programme as I've just been contacted by the company producing it with a question. "Would you happen to have any data on how many people have died in the winter of 1962/63?" I'm assuming it is the extra deaths in that winter, but I haven't got a clue what the answer is. Has anyone here? -- Mike Tullett - Coleraine 55.13°N 6.69°W posted 1/20/2010 7:22:01 PM GMT |

Has anyone here? I imagine the major cause of extra deaths would be hypothermia, mainly affecting old people. Of course houses were generally less well heated and insulated then, which would increases the numbers further compared to more recent winters. I think such deaths would dwarf deaths from accidents caused by the weather. They would probably do best to ask the Department of Health. They ought to have some statistics on how the number of deaths during that winter compared with the average. -- John Hall "Acting is merely the art of keeping a large group of people from coughing." I found there is a trailer for the programme on the company's website. http://www.pioneertv.com/BritainsBigFreeze.flv -- Mike Tullett - Coleraine 55.13°N 6.69°W posted 1/20/2010 7:49:36 PM GMT |
