I've noticed that over the last few days, at first I thought it was an
error in the synops, but this is what turned up:

Today's GFS 12Z shows that at that time a shallow low was situated just
off the Atlantic coast of Morocco. I wonder if that was the feature
responsible. It might well have been deeper and further west 24 hours or
so previously.

Photo below it is of mud and water in the streets of Santa Cruz on Tenerife.

The low responsible can be seen in these APT resolution images from the 31st
Jan and 2 Feb (not available for the 1st Feb).
Plenty of deep convection in the Canary Is area

This same low moved northeast and over southern Iberia last night... it gave
64mm at Gibraltar, 34mm of that fell in one hour (03-04Z).
