I have only just got round to checking my snowfall statistics for last
month. Here in Ewell I noted 13 days with ' snow falling' during the month - which was the highest total for January since 1985 which logged 15 days and it beat January 1979 which scored 12. During the last 40 years ( I started noting these events in 1970) the month with the highest number of ' snow days' was February 1986 with 17 days ( mostly in small amounts as I remember). In the first 20 years of my record, the annual average was near 18 snow days, but in the last 20 years the average has dropped to 10. In other words, January this year has comfortably beaten the recent average annual total on its own! Digging a bit deeper I discovered that it was also a higher total than the yearly total in 11 of the previous 13 years. The highest annual total in the 40 year record was 1986 with 37 snow days. The lowest yearly score was in 1998 with just 2 days. Peter Clarke Ewell Epsom 55m |
